All about Chakras

What is a Chakra?
The word "Chakra" means "wheel" or "circle" in Sanskrit. It's named this way because it spins like a wheel due to the movement of life energy (Prana).
Chakras are important places in the body where energy paths (Nadis) come together.
Why Do Chakras Have Different Numbers of Petals?
Chakras are often represented by lotuses, each having a specific number of petals. These petals symbolize the Nadis (energy pathways) that converge at the junction point of that chakra.
The greater the number of petals, the more energy flows through that chakra, amplifying its influence on the body and mind. Each chakra’s unique petal count reflects its vibrational frequency and spiritual significance.
What is the relation between Nāḍīs and Chakra Petals?
-
Muladhara (Root Chakra) - 4 Petals
-
4 nāḍīs converge here, forming the foundation of physical existence and stability.
-
-
Swadhisthana (Sacral Chakra) - 6 Petals
-
6 nāḍīs meet here, influencing emotions, creativity, and desires.
-
-
Manipura (Solar Plexus Chakra) - 10 Petals
-
10 nāḍīs converge, representing transformation, digestion, and personal power.
-
-
Anahata (Heart Chakra) - 12 Petals
-
12 nāḍīs unite, governing love, compassion, and the heart-mind connection.
-
-
Vishuddha (Throat Chakra) - 16 Petals
-
16 nāḍīs merge, related to expression, communication, and purity of speech.
-
-
Ajna (Third Eye Chakra) - 2 Petals
-
Only 2 nāḍīs converge (Ida & Pingala), symbolizing the duality of perception and the gateway to higher consciousness.
-
-
Sahasrara (Crown Chakra) - 1000 Petals
-
Symbolizes an infinite number of nāḍīs, as this chakra represents the ultimate merging with universal consciousness.
-
What are the different states a Chakra can have?
Each chakra can be in one of three states based on how fast Prana (life energy) is spinning:
-
Overactive Chakra – When Prana spins too fast, the chakra becomes overactive, causing excess energy flow, which may lead to an imbalance in the related body parts.
-
Balanced Chakra – When Prana spins at a normal rate, energy flows smoothly, keeping the body and mind in harmony.
-
Underactive Chakra – When Prana spins too slowly, the chakra becomes weak, leading to low energy and possibly physical or emotional issues.
If a chakra is overactive or underactive, it can become blocked or imbalanced, which may cause illness or emotional difficulties. Keeping chakras balanced is important for overall well-being.
How many Chakras are there in the human body?
There are 114 chakras and 72,000 energy pathways (Nadis) in the body.
Types of Chakras:
-
112 chakras are in the body, and 2 are outside.
-
86 of these chakras are tiny, also called acupuncture points.
-
21 are minor chakras that work with the main chakras.
-
The last 7 are major chakras, with 5 along the spine, 1 on the forehead, and 1 above the head.
What are Nadis or Energy Pathways?
There are 3 main energy pathways along the spine: Ida (left), Pingala (right), and Sushumna (center). The 7 chakras are where these pathways meet, creating strong energy centers called the '7 centers of energy' (7 chakras).
Ida Nāḍī – The Passive Channel
Associated with the left side of the body and the brain's right hemisphere. It represents the moon (Chandra), feminine energy, coolness, and intuition.
Pingala Nāḍī –The Active Channel
Associated with the right side of the body and the left hemisphere of the brain. It represents the sun (Surya), masculine energy, heat, and activity.
Sushumna Nāḍī – The Central Channel
It runs along the spinal column, connecting the base of the spine to the crown of the head. It is the central channel through which kundalini energy rises when Ida and Pingala are balanced.
Balancing Pingala (Sun) and Ida (Moon) channels enables the awakening and ascent of Kundalini Shakti through the Sushumna Nadi, leading to the expansion of higher consciousness.
I use these chakra balancing activities with the drawing of Mandalas based on the chakras. You can join me in my online art classes or check this YT playlist:-https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOACoiqGxH_NaMophTBigF06lqCvT7oGJ
